内容简介:Using hand-collected data on siblings of Chairmen among Chinese family firms, we examine the impact of having siblings on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of their firms. The findings suggest that when a firm has siblings-chairman, her firm has better CSR rating than that of a firm having chairman without siblings. Specifically, a firm with siblings-chairman, on average, has approximately 7.96% CSR rating higher than a median firm’s rating. The conclusions are robust to a battery of robustness checks including a regression discontinuity research design, alternative measures of CSR, after accounting for province and firm fixed effect, and using different estimation methods. Additional analysis suggests that the mechanisms behind siblings and CSR are consistent with both the competition and altruistic effects among siblings. We also find that firms with siblings-chairmen are also pro-shareholder by having less perk consumption than those of without siblings-chairmen.
